How a company gets on this list
- 1
Start from the public record
Every listing begins as a company's own Google Business record in Illinois.
- 2
Keep the real ones
Open companies with at least one Google review stay. Duplicates are merged.
- 3
Read their website
We read each company's own site for the fence types and services it says it offers.
- 4
Say when we do not know
If the website does not say, the listing says "call and ask". We never guess.
No company pays to be listed, and no company can pay to change its rating or its place in the ranked list. Paid spots exist, and every one is labeled Featured on the card.
Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add their own photos. A person checks every claim. How listings are compiled.
Before you hire a fence company in Illinois
Pick the fence first. Not every company installs every type. Wood and vinyl are the most common here, and 207 companies on this site say they install aluminum, the usual choice around pools and front yards. Choose the material, then call the companies whose own website confirms it. On every town page you can tap a fence type to narrow the list.
Check your town's rules. Illinois leaves fence permits to each city, village and county, and the limits differ a lot. Rockford allows 6 feet in side and rear yards and 4 feet in front. Schaumburg limits most side and rear fences to 5 feet. Many towns want a plat of survey with the fence drawn on it. See the rules for your city.
Make sure someone calls JULIE. State law requires whoever digs the post holes to call 811 at least 3 days before digging, not counting weekends and holidays. The call is free. If your fence company digs, it makes the call. Ask.
Get it in writing. The Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act names fences. On any job over $1,000, the company must give you a written contract to sign before work starts, with the total cost and materials listed, plus the state's consumer rights pamphlet.
Ask for proof of insurance. Illinois does not license general contractors, and most fence companies are covered only by local registration, if any. The state does require home repair companies to carry liability insurance unless they have a net worth of $1,000,000 or more. A certificate of insurance takes them a minute to send.
Don't pay it all up front. The Attorney General's advice is never to pay in cash or by Venmo or Zelle, and never to pay in full until the work is done. Be careful with anyone who knocks on your door with a deal.
Frequently asked questions
How are fence contractors listed here?
Every listing starts from the company's public Google Business record. We keep companies that are open, have at least one Google review and do fence work. Then we read each company's own website and mark which fence types and services it says it offers. When the website does not say, the listing says so instead of guessing.
Do companies pay to be listed?
No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Companies can pay for a featured spot at the top of a town page, and every paid spot is labeled Featured on the card.
Do you check licenses or insurance?
No. We do not verify licenses, insurance or the quality of anyone's work. Ask for a certificate of insurance and check with your town's building department before you sign. Many Illinois towns require a fence permit.
My company is listed and something is wrong. How do I fix it?
Use the Claim link on your listing, or email hello@fencecontractorsillinois.com. We fix corrections and honor removal requests within the week.
